Lighting Size Guide
A few simple rules make it much easier to choose the right size fixture and hang it at the right height.
Choosing a chandelier for a room
Add the room's length and width in feet. The total is roughly the right diameter for the fixture in inches. For example, a 12 ft × 14 ft room suits a fixture about 26 inches wide.
Over a dining table
- Choose a fixture about one-half to two-thirds the width of the table.
- Hang the bottom of the fixture 30–36 inches above the tabletop.
Over a kitchen island
- Hang pendants 30–36 inches above the countertop.
- Space multiple pendants about 24–30 inches apart, and keep them at least 6 inches in from each end of the island.
- A linear island chandelier should be about 12 inches shorter than the island.
Entryways and foyers
Leave at least 7 feet of clearance under the fixture. In a two-story foyer, hang the fixture so it sits roughly level with or just below the second-floor window.
Matching the fixture to ceiling height
- Under 8 ft: flush mount ceiling lights
- 8–9 ft: semi-flush mounts or compact chandeliers
- 9 ft and higher: chandeliers and pendants with adjustable chains or rods
Bathroom vanities
Mount vanity lights about 75–80 inches from the floor, and choose a fixture about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the mirror.
